Open Space Technology & the Revitalization of CIOP
Program Overview
The newly elected CIOP board met recently to plan the 2005 CIOP
year. As we discussed program ideas and the makeup of our membership,
it became clear that we just don't understand well enough the diverse
needs and expectations of our current CIOP membership. Nor do we
understand why some of you have ceased to participate in the last few
years. The lack of widespread ownership and involvement in CIOP beyond
the board was striking.
With this in mind, our first program will be a forum for current
and former members (and those considering membership) to get together
to define our interests and needs while also learning an organization
development intervention called Open Space Technology. This first
session will enable you to contribute to CIOP's vision and to effect
change.
In typical organization development fashion, we'll learn by doing.
The theme we'll be exploring is the revitalization of CIOP. We want to
understand what purpose CIOP serves for you and what you need from the
organization in 2005 and beyond.
Open Space Technology has been with us for some time, but only in
recent years has it gained prominence. Harrison Owen, a Maryland-based
management consultant and the creator of Open Space Technology, came
up with this innovative approach to more productive meetings for
groups large and small. The impetus of this approach was the
realization that attendees at carefully orchestrated meetings and
conferences tended to get the most value and energy from the impromptu
meetings during the coffee breaks. So, the Open Space concept is about
creating meetings that consist entirely of coffee breaks and
jettisoning the carefully crafted agendas of the meeting convener for
the on the spot agenda setting of the attendees.
We will use the Open Space concepts to guide our meetings in March.
We will hold meetings on the same day in both the suburbs and the city
to encourage as much attendance as possible. While we want to know
about your thoughts on CIOP, this is entirely your meeting and what we
do will be up to you and what you feel passionate about. It will be a
great opportunity to network with your colleagues and to have your say
about what CIOP should be for you and the Chicago I/O community.
